Why I Started the Living Notebook Project.

“Art is not about art. Art is about life. And that sums it up.” – Louise Bourgeois

I’m interested in documenting how other people create art, and the best way to do this is by recording the process as it takes shape alongside daily experiences. I feel the process offers a more authentic window to creativity than the polished piece. The finished work itself can be deemed solely an individual pursuit playing a function inside a larger arena. But viewing the process is viewing a collective movement towards higher consciousness as it takes place. It’s the action of creativity that interests me the most.

Also, I’m just plain old curious. I want to see what becomes of this notebook as it travels across the world. I want to see how and where other writers work. I want to see them living their lives. And, I want to see this notebook alive through their experiences. The humanness of objects is another fascination of mine. I know the notebook will feel different when it is returned to me because it will have had, in essence, its own life. I’m hoping that life will bring awareness to the participants’ world, which will inevitably teach us about ourselves.

When you shine a torch, you see the places where you illuminate as well as your shadows.
