Backlash Mother! Interview with Meditation Writer Charlotte Fay

I’m Charlotte Fay, a writer and Meditation Teacher from Kent, UK. I have always loved and found comfort in writing, whether it be poetry, fiction or non-fiction. Writing in whatever format will always be a part of my life. I started meditating as a way to relieve anxiety and relax when I was pregnant with my son. I absolutely fell in love with it and have since received certification to teach it. I now incorporate my writing and meditation through books, articles and guided meditations with the hope of expanding into relaxation sessions and retreats.

Where do you work? And what does the space look like?

I work from my sofa and my dining table most of the time. If it’s nice outdoors then I will sit on our little bistro table and work whilst listening to the sound of the birds. I try to keep the space I’m working tidy but with a four year old that can sometimes be difficult. But I do like to have gentle music playing and often light a scented candle to create a nicer working space mood.

Is there a creative routine that you swear by?

My routines have changed and developed over the last few years as my son has grown. But generally I get up and spend the first 10-30 minutes reading with a pint of water and lemon. Usually this is something uplifting and positive as apposed to a novel. I will then have some breakfast. After we have eaten my son usually has a little time to play and whilst he is doing this I try to squeeze in a 10 minute meditation (this doesn’t always last 10 minutes). We then dress and prepare to leave the house. We like to walk to school, not only does it give us a little exercise but it wakes us up properly and gets us some fresh air. By the time I have walked him I am ready to make a coffee and start working.
Do you have a mantra?

I love this question. I use several depending on what mood I am in but generally I love this one. ‘Stay calm, breathe and you will achieve’.

What is the best advice you have ever been given?

I think that not everyone will like or understand what you do. The important thing is to remain true to yourself. I think this can be one of the biggest roadblocks people can have when creating their art. Being scared of what others will think. It’s not an easy thing to get over. But whilst some people won’t get what you do on the other end of the scale some people will absolutely love it and that’s what you have to think about.

Apart from time, what do you need consistently throughout the week in order to be creative?

Ideally I need quiet space with little distraction. When I am writing meditations it helps for me to read them out aloud to myself and see how they feel. This can be difficult if there are distractions like loud roadworks nearby. With that in mind once a meditation is written I then spend time recording them so that they can be uploaded and reach more people. If the space I am recording in isn’t quiet then it can really affect the ambiance of the recording. I’m also very fond of coffee and a biscuit break.
